Created the original look and feel for this Annual art show. Posters, postcards, evites, flyers and banners for the 7 artists featured in this 2nd Annual Mill Valley Art Show.

The piece was used for a year-end appeal. The story behind this project is moving: Based in Oakland, Youth ALIVE! believes that urban youth have the innate capacity to stop the violence plaguing our communities. Every day, they nurture leadership and life skills of young people affected by violence on the premise that addressing the root causes of violence saves lives.

Caheri Gutierrez, the young lady on the materials above, was not a gang member; however, she was the victim in a drive-by shooting in East Oakland when she was just 18. The bullet burst through the passenger side window, ripped through her face and stopped in the right arm of her friend driving the car. When Gutierrez awoke in the hospital a week later, she had lost the hearing in her right ear, her face was paralyzed, and she had no teeth. The one-time teenage model spent a month at Highland Hospital and had numerous surgeries to repair and rebuild her face. She received emotional support from Youth ALIVE! When a job opened at the Oakland-based non-profit in a program called Teens on Target (TNT), her mentor suggested that Gutierrez apply. Gutierrez is now a mentor and guide to students in Oakland.

For more than twelve years, Joan Collett Brown has had opportunities to visit many Eastern European and some Asian countries as a volunteer election observer for OSCE (Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe).

She has concentrated on painting from photographs taken on excursions to the countries where she worked as a long-term observer. This moving series is from a trip to Albania in 2007, Moldova in 2008 and Serbia in 2009.

Joan Collett Brown has been a student of Ning Hou, the renowned Sacramento Delta artist for more than ten years.
